I have a spare, so the failing one went in a drawer.   The other day I was thinking about making my own temperature probe for another project, and figured now would be a perfect time to cut open that old probe to see what&#8217;s inside!<\/p>\n<h2>Components<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/38917611@N08\/3892807640\/sizes\/l\/\" title=\"Probe Internals by br3ttb, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2676\/3892807640_20b2eaf55e.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Probe Internals\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took the probe down to the &#8216;ol <a href=\"http:\/\/willoughbybaltic.ning.com\/\">hackerspace<\/a> and gave it quick cut on the bandsaw.  With the outer sheath open everything just slid out, and I got a look at the internals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thermistor<\/li>\n<li>plastic sheath<\/li>\n<li>shielded\/insulated single conductor wire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/38917611@N08\/3892818466\/sizes\/l\/\" title=\"Shielded Single conductor by br3ttb, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2586\/3892818466_a557abaa9c.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Shielded Single conductor\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That last one threw me for a loop.\u00c2\u00a0 A SINGLE conductor wire?\u00c2\u00a0 I thought for sure there would be two insulated conductors inside that shielding. \u00c2\u00a0 It turns out they actually use the shielding as one of the conductors.\u00c2\u00a0 In the picture below you can see where the negative lead (I presume) is attached to the shield.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/38917611@N08\/3892019647\/sizes\/l\/\" title=\"Thermistor Closeup by br3ttb, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2502\/3892019647_601f306313.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Thermistor Closeup\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Current travels out through the insulated wire, and returns through the shield.\u00c2\u00a0 The resistance of the loop is determined by the temperature the thermistor is seeing.  The base unit infers the temperature and displays it.<\/p>\n<h2>You Mentioned &#8220;Another Project?&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Oh right, this is a project blog.  The idea for a probe project is this: I make barbecue.  During the ~16 hour cooking process I&#8217;d like to have 4-5 probes in the meat at various depths.  In this way I could show the temperature gradient throughout the cooking process.
